What do you get when you combine fruit, citrus, sugar, and wine?A Fruit Salad!!

All joking aside, what you really get has unagruable become known as one of the most ubiquitous summer time, warm weather, sit back and relax, beverages of all time.

A bevvy that has found itself on countless restaurant menus throughout the world. A libation that has been involved with marriages, breakups, wars, conquests, happy hours, and countless siestas. An imbibing elixir that is at home with any bottle of wine, be it red, white, rose, sparkling, or any style in between.

You know who we are talking about…the one, the only…THE SANGRIA!!

For centuries, mankind has worshipped the Sangria. Not in the sense of it being a deity or anything, but more reverence. as being the trend setter or, in some nationalities, Don, of the cocktail, mixed drink, and libation world.

The Sangira can trace its roots back to the origins of wine itself. So, before we get ahead of ourselves, here is a quick and slightly abridged history of wine. Some truly forward-thinking dudes and dudettes in the year 6000 BCE fermented, by accident, grape juice and consumed it for religious and celebratory events. Thus, wine was born, and the rest is drunken history.

Now, back to the Sangria…

Throughout history, many variations of Sangria have led to the creation of the beverage we know today. From the early Greeks and Romans mixing indigenous spices and sugar in their wine, think of something akin to a mulled wine or mixing our Turkey Gravy into your wine, to many Europeans using whatever fruit or citrus was on hand to make their wine that much more palatable, drinkable, and downright delicious.

The modern Sangria, though, can trace it’s roots back to around the middle ages in the Kingdom of León, which is in present day Spain, where residents would make a libation named Leónese Lemonade utilizing a citrus base, local fruits, sugar, and spices to create a concoction so respected and so delicious that locals flocked to it for everything from religious occasions to festivals and even before their afternoon siestas.

As the decades ticked by and Spain, along with most of Europe, started to conquer the world (this is a blog for another time), the Sangria, as a beverage, found itself in a unique position, one that could preserve culture as well as pass on new traditions.

As the Sangria spread, new variations began to emerge, those from the Caribbean utilizing exciting new spices and regional fruit to tropical sangrias and even those using sparkling beverages, brandy, and rum. The Sangria was officially introduced to the United States by way of the Spain pavilion at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York. Since this introduction, Americans have become obsessed with this delicious wine cocktail, serving it everywhere and anywhere with unique fruit combinations and variations.

No matter how you mix it, the Sangria will always remain evergreen and is truly the life “blood” of the beverage world, holding true to not only its history but also it’s namesake!

Fun fact if you catch it, the name Sangria comes from and is based on the Spanish word “sangre”, meaning blood…See what we did there? ❤️ 🍷 🤣
